Choose Your Path

Brown University's School of Professional Studies offers two distinct training paths for aspiring mindfulness facilitators grounded in rigorous, evidence-based tradition: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

MBSR Foundations and Facilitator Training

Rooted in Jon Kabat-Zinn’s pioneering work, MBSR is widely used in healthcare, education, and workplace settings.

This path is ideal for:

  • Healthcare providers, educators, and wellness professionals
  • Individuals focused on stress reduction and resilience-building
  • Those seeking to ground their teaching in body-based, experiential mindfulness practices

become an MBSR facilitator

MBCT Foundations and Facilitator Training

Originally developed to prevent depressive relapse, MBCT integrates cognitive therapy with mindfulness.

This path requires training in CBT and is therefore is ideal for:

  • Clinicians, therapists, and mental health professionals
  • Individuals working with stress, anxiety, and mood regulation
  • Those seeking a deeper understanding of the cognitive underpinnings of mindfulness

become an MBCT facilitator

What You'll Learn

Through guided mindfulness practices, didactic presentation, group dialogue and tailored instruction, you will learn the essential principles of mindfulness and techniques to build your practice.

The (MBSR / MBCT) Foundations and Facilitator Trainings nurture both personal practice and teaching abilities through guided reflection and exploration of your individual meditation experience.

The curricula delve into the deeply personal nature of mindfulness practice, enabling you to cultivate essential teacher qualities that form the foundation for understanding the essence of MBSR / MBCT. You'll discover the aliveness and wisdom inherent in the curricula while developing your authentic voice as a facilitator.

Format

Embracing the experiential nature of MBSR / MBCT, this program integrates multiple learning approaches:

  • Live interactive sessions
  • Guided mindfulness practices
  • Small group discussions and teaching exercises
  • Personalized feedback and mentoring
  • Individual assignments and reflection opportunities

The program thoughtfully blends mindfulness practice, self-inquiry, and teaching skills development through synchronous sessions, collaborative learning, and independent work (approximately 12–15 hours of engagement per week throughout the course).

The MBSR/MBCT Foundations and Facilitator program includes two course components:

  • 8-week MBSR or MBCT course (2.5 hours per week, plus an orientation and all-day session) of which you will engage in as both a participant and observer. Note that this is separate from the 8-week MBSR or MBCT course you would have completed as a prerequisite for the course.
  • 10-week Foundations seminar (3.5 hours per week)
