Professional Development

The School of Professional Studies (SPS) offers career and professional development services for Brown’s early career and executive master’s students at all stages of their career.

Whether you are just starting your journey at Brown, about to finish, or strategizing the next move in your career, SPS is here to support you. Our goal is to enable master’s students to explore and pursue fulfilling careers in the academy, private industry, government, nonprofits, start-ups, and anywhere in between.

You can get started on your own or meet with us before you start and at any point.

Master’s Student Leadership Development Initiative

The scope of the Master’s Student Leadership Initiative (MSLDI) is to recognize, motivate, inspire, and support graduate students who excel both in their studies and in leadership and service to the graduate student community. This is achieved through the work of dedicated staff facilitating educational, skill building, developmental, community building, and collaboration opportunities for graduate student leaders in the campus community.

SPS demonstrates commitment to leadership development in the graduate community in the following ways:

  • Making funding available for both online and residential master’s students to attend professional development conferences to learn new skills, stay abreast of industry trends, and grow their professional networks.
  • Providing training, guidance and support for students at the helm of fostering community and belonging at Brown through Graduate Student Leadership and Development (GLAD) training.
  • Developing and driving co-curricular programming and student engagement opportunities aimed at encouraging the personal growth, professional development, and cross disciplinary collaboration that are at the core of Brown’s open curriculum and educational culture.

SPS ensures access to professional development opportunities for master’s students, whether they are presenting or attending a conference or workshop to gain a new skill or to dive deeper into their academic and professional interests.

SPS creates and drives co-curricular programming and student engagement through a monthly offering of events focused on fostering community and affirming the belonging of our master’s students in the Brown learning and living community. Many events are in collaboration with Graduate Student Organizations, Brown’s Identity Centers, the Graduate School, RISD’s Center for Complexity, and other campus partners and are focused on the cultivation of experiences that deepen students’ sense of belonging, facilitate personal development, create opportunities for mentorship and peer support, and promote overall student wellness.

You can find and register for upcoming events here.
