Brown's School of Professional Studies is turning 10!

Dear Brown Community,

Please join us to celebrate 10 years of opportunity; 10 years of impact; 10 years of going beyond!

Becoming a School

With origins that span more than four decades, the Brown University faculty voted in 2014 to establish the School of Professional Studies (SPS) as one of four professional schools, with a charge to extend the University’s impact locally and globally by reaching new audiences of learners.

Since then, SPS has been delivering educational programs that take students beyond. Beyond the classroom, benefiting from real-world experiences and opportunities to apply knowledge in ever-more meaningful ways. Beyond their networks, creating lasting relationships with classmates across time zones and industries. Beyond their worldviews, reconsidered through exposure to diverse perspectives and multidisciplinary scholarly expertise. And beyond what they thought was possible for themselves.

Year 10 and Beyond

Over the next academic year, we will mark this 10th anniversary milestone with a range of events to invite greater awareness of the school and our offerings, as well as programming to inspire personal and professional growth. The commemoration will include a campus wide event that considers the future of work; showcase exceptional faculty and alumni addressing salient topics such as the implications of A.I. and emerging technologies in the workplace; and, in partnership with Brown Human Resources, offer professional development sessions for staff to support skill-building and career growth. We will launch new programs and continue to welcome increasing numbers of talented individuals seeking greater empowerment through professional education.

And we will applaud the people who built, support and contribute to this amazing community. This includes founding Dean Karen Sibley and her successor, Dean Leah VanWey, as well as the extraordinary staff and faculty who have shaped SPS throughout the years.

We will honor our valued partners and showcase the innovative programs launched over the decade that meet the needs of learners across the career cycle. These include our professional master’s programs in Healthcare Leadership and Technology Leadership, and the IE Brown Executive MBA program, as well as the executive education and certificate programs ranging from Mindfulness-based offerings and Digital Innovation in Healthcare to Leader as Coach and Inclusive Leadership Strategies.

We will reinforce our abiding commitment to SPS’s original and enduring charge, celebrating the expanded universe of learners who join us in person and online to cultivate a vibrant educational environment. And we will strengthen our connection to the thousands of alumni who, through their lives and work, further the University’s mission to serve the community, nation and the world.

Perhaps most importantly, we will look beyond these 10 years and toward the future – challenging ourselves to remain at the forefront of delivering transformative degrees and executive programs that respond to the evolving needs of leaders, industries and workplaces.
