Capstone: Critical Challenge Project

Drive measurable change in your organization while you earn your degree.

The Critical Challenge Project (CCP) is an immersive experience at the center of the Master of Science in Technology Leadership program. During the fall semester, you identify a problem in your organization or industry, develop a solution and lead its impact.

Using Brown School of Engineering's design thinking methodology, you'll work through problem identification, solution design and implementation alongside Brown faculty advisors and a cohort of peer technical leaders.

The CCP provides an opportunity to apply what you are learning in the classroom to a problem that matters to your organization, industry or career aspirations.

What will you gain from the CCP?

  • Demonstrate how business fundamentals can be combined with personal leadership skills to advance a solution to the challenge project
  • Develop a solution to the challenge that is adaptable to changing market needs, technological advances and increased global competition
  • Articulate the rationale, value and importance of the project in ways that are meaningful to senior leaders in your organization
  • Successfully lead, inspire and communicate with diverse, cross-functional teams and stakeholders in order to advance solutions

Delivering Impact

The CCP often produces outcomes that extend well beyond the classroom. Alumni have used their projects to influence strategy, launch products, develop new processes and create measurable value within their organizations.

Students are frequently recognized, promoted or moved into new career paths as a direct result. Their work often outlasts the program, becoming a product, a patent, a pilot or a strategic shift inside the company.

  • Nearly half said their CCP directly influenced strategy or decision-making at their organization
  • About one in three had their CCP implemented and put into ongoing use inside their organization
  • 15% said their CCP led directly to a new role, promotion or job offer
  • 14% reported their CCP resulted in a patent, new product or new internal process
  • 12% used the CCP as the foundation for a company they founded or co-founded
  • Nearly 80% report their CCP produced at least one concrete outcome, with a number of alumni reporting individual project impact above $25 million and aggregate reported business value exceeding $788 million.

Why is it valuable to employers?

  1. Alignment with Important Strategic Issues - Employers gain the benefit of dedicated employee effort on issues of key strategic importance to the organization's success. Advisors to the CP can be Brown Faculty or  expert co-advisors that can  come from the student's organization or elsewhere in the industry. We recognize the sensitive nature of student work and contributions to their company. We work with students and faculty to preserve confidentiality as needed.
  2. Employee Development - Used effectively, employers can leverage the CP to develop individual talent in the organization. Students gain the skills, tools, and knowledge to grow their career and contribution to their organization.
  3. Access to Brown University Resources and Leadership - Students have access to a powerful network of resources including faculty, advisors, academic/library resources, and peers across industries to broaden and strengthen their solutions/action plans.
  4. Results - Students create fully developed actionable plans, addressing real-time industry and organization challenges.
