EMSTL 2019 Heads to South Korea to Learn from Industry Leaders of Global Innovation

It’s just about boarding time to Seoul, South Korea for the Executive Master of Science and Technology Leadership (EMSTL) Class of 2019. The South Korea immersion session is an important and exciting component of the global innovation curriculum in EMSTL. In today’s geopolitical climate characterized by tariffs, Brexit, and xenophobia, it’s more important than ever that today’s innovative leaders understand how to manage and work within globally-dispersed teams and mobilize worldwide value in a changing regulatory environment.

Upon arriving in Seoul, students will spend the week studying with faculty from the Graduate School of Business and Engineering and Arts Department from the Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), one of the top universities in the country.  They’ll examine the ecosystem for technological innovation in South Korea and the factors that drive its success. Students will gain a sophisticated understanding of how Korean culture and its unique characteristics have influenced Korea’s rise as one of the most technologically advanced and educated nations worldwide.

One of the most exciting and unique aspects of this immersion week will be the highly curated set of visits to leading companies, including Hyundai Motors, Samsung Electric, SAP and SOCAR. EMSTL ’19 cohort members will have the opportunity to interact with management and explore issues they have studied during the course.

Commenting on the immersion session, EMSTL Program Director Mike Donohue shared:

This experience is designed to provide a transformational learning environment for our students. The key learning objective is to understand the historical background and cultural characteristics that affected Asia’s technological development in the general framework of economic growth. Students will walk away with ‘best practices’ that can be applied to their current professional environments and an understanding of how to conduct business in an Asian environment.
