Congratulations to Brown Computer Science and Alumni for authoring some of the most cited security papers at the four top-tier security conferences over the past 30 years, according to Professor Konrad Rieck of Technische Universität Braunschweig’s list of Influential Security Papers. Our faculty members and alumni have earned the following:
- A paper (“Dynamic Provable Data Possession”) from Brown CS PhD alums C. Christopher Erway (now Chief Architect of the SolarWinds Monitoring Cloud), Alptekin Küpçü (now Assistant Professor at Koç University), and Charalampos Papamanthou (now Assistant Professor at University of Maryland, College Park) and Plastech Professor of Computer Science Roberto Tamassia has earned the #5 spot for papers published in 2009. It’s also the 49th most cited paper since 1981. Their work, originally presented at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS) has received 1026 cites at Google Scholar, putting it 746% above that year’s average. The research was completed while Christopher, Alptekin, and Charalampos were PhD students at Brown CS, and it resulted in an issued patent.
- A paper (“Searchable Symmetric Encryption: Improved Definitions and Efficient Constructions”) by Professor Seny Kamara has earned the #2 spot for research published in 2006. It’s also the 28th most cited paper since 1981. The list 2006 work, co-authored with Reza Curtmola, Juan A. Garay, and Rafail Ostrovsky (now at NJIT, Yahoo Research, and UCLA, respectively), originally released at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS) has received 1,489 cites at Google Scholar, putting it 1076% above that year’s average.
- A paper (“Dynamic Searchable Symmetric Encryption”) by Professor Seny Kamara and alum Charalampos Papamanthou, co-authored with Tom Roeder (now at Google) holds the #6 spot for papers published in 2012. It’s received 456 cites at Google Scholar, putting it 506% above that year’s average.
